First Work Day - Day 14

The goats were worked on Friday morning, June 23rd. They were run through the handling system. FAMACHA© eye anemia and body condition scores (BCS) were determined. Only 2 of the 47 goats required deworming. One of the goats that was dewormed was being treated for a fever. His FAMACHA© score was 3/5. Another goat had a FAMACHA© score of 4/5.

All of the goats were dewormed (with Cydectin® 1% injectable) when they arrived to the test station on June 10. Fecal samples were collected.

On June 10, the average FAMACHA© score for the 47 goats was 2.3. On June 23, the averaged score was 2.2. Body condition scores average 2.6/5.0 on both dates. A few goats dropped a half condition score, while others gained a half condition score.

On July 7, the goats will be weighed. A second fecal sample will be collected (day 28). Every two weeks FAMACHA© scores and body condition scores will be evaluated and used to determine the need for deworming individual goats.

Rain, at long last
June had been a very dry month in Keedysville, until yesterday. Yesterday, the research center received 3.5 inches of rainfall. The average for the month is about 3.5 inches.
