End of Test

Seventy-seven bucks started the 2014 Western Maryland Pasture-Based Meat Goat Performance Test. Seventy-one finished the test. On August 28, the final data was collected. The goats were weighed on August 28 and 29. The two weights were averaged to determine the ending weight.

Modest, but mixed gains
Ending weights ranged from 35.6 to 73.4 lbs. and averaged 52.3 ± 8.2 lbs. The median ending weight was 51.9 lbs. For the final two week period, gain ranged from -8.8 to 7.8 lbs. and averaged 2.0 ± 3.5 lbs. The median gain was 1.8 lbs.

For the final two weeks of the test, average daily gain (ADG) ranged from -0.629 to 0.557 lbs. per day and averaged 0.143 ± 0.249 lbs. per day. The median ADG was 0.129 lbs. per day. The top-gaining goat was #441, a Purebred Kiko consigned by Jodie Majancsik (KY).

For the 84-day duration of the test, average daily gain ranged from -0.119 to 0.220 lbs. per day and averaged 0.057 ± 0.077 lbs. per day. The median ADG was 0.064 lbs. per day.

The top-gaining buck was #441. The buck with the second highest rate-of-gain was 434, a Kiko x Boer consigned by Linda Heise, a first-time consignor from Pennsylvania. 434 gained 0.183 lbs. per day.

Higher FAMACHA© scores
On August 28, FAMACHA© scores ranged from 1 to 4 and averaged 2.2 ± 0.8, compared to 1.9 ± 0.7 on August 14. The higher FAMACHA© scores were consistent with the higher fecal egg counts from August 14.

Nine goats were dewormed with either levamisole or moxidectin. All of the goats were given a gel cap containing 0.5 g of copper oxide wire particles (COWPs). Results from the final fecal sample won't be known until early next week.

Body condition, coat condition, and dag scores remained mostly unchanged, though a few goats had their condition scores reduced by a half score. Fecal consistency scores declined to 3.2, indicating softer feces.
