July 20 - Day 42

Keedysville, MD, 6:30 a.m. -- The goats were worked today by Jeff Semler, Jeanne Dietz-Band, Mary Beth Bennett, Cindy Mason, Tamara Jones (a volunteer), and Susan Schoenian. FAMACHA© eye anemia and body condition scores (BCS) were determined by Susan Schoenian.

28-day weights were determined by Jeff Semler. As previously indicated, the first 13 days of the test are being used as an adjustment period for the goats. For the purpose of calculating ADG, the weights taken on June 22 are being used as the starting weights.

This Kiko cross goats consigned by Bill Lowe gained 0.5 lbs. per dayThe goats gained well during the past 28 days. The situation was ideal for goats: dry weather, but plenty to eat (orchard grass, pearl millet, and miscellaneous weeds). Of course, that situation is changing. The weather remains dry and the forage base is depleting. We figure we have enough pasture for about 2 more weeks, no more. The region continues to be starved for rainfall.

ADG ranged from 0.14 to 0.57 lbs. per day for a group average of 0.42 lbs. per day. FAMACHA© scores improved slightly from 2.15 to 1.94, after having declined by a half point two weeks ago. As a result, no goat required anthelmintic treatment. Body condition scores remained relatively constant. A few goats were treated for respiratory symptoms and fevers. We continue to treat ear tag infections.

goats waiting to be workedThe goats will be worked next on August 3. A final fecal sample will be collected from the rectum of each goat. FAMACHA© and body condition scores will be determined. A final weight will be taken if the pasture can no longer support the goats. If rains come (in time) to replenish the pastures, we may be able to continue the test.
