Ultrasound Scanning Results

The goats were scanned on September 25th to determine backfat thickness (BF) and ribeye area (REA). Backfat thickness for the 31 bucks ranged from 0.04 inches to 0.14 inches and averaged 0.077 inches.

Ribeye area ranged from 1.06 to 1.86 square inches and averaged 1.43 square inches. The heaviest, fastest gaining buck in the test (98 lbs.) also had the largest ribeye area: 1.86 square inches. This buck, a high percentage Boer, was consigned by Willie Lantz (A.L.L. Boer Goats, Oakland, MD).

Two other bucks had similar sized ribeye muscles. A 74-lb. Boer x Kiko buck consigned by Don Smith (Back 60 Goat Farm, Charlottsville, VA) measured a 1.81 square inch ribeye. A 74 lb. Kiko buck consigned by Sky and Deborah Shivers (Blu Sky Kikos, Prague, OK) had a 1.80 square inch ribeye.
