For this weigh period, gain ranged from -5.6 to 7.8 lbs. and averaged 2.5 ± 2.7 lbs. The large standard deviation indicates a wide variation in growth performance. The median gain was 2.6 lbs. Average daily gain (ADG) ranged from -0.400 to 0.557 lbs. per day and averaged 0.177 ± 0.191 lbs. per day. The median ADG was 0.186 lbs. per day.
For the period, the top gaining goat was 655 (Patrick, KY). Four other goats gained around the 0.5 lb. per day mark: 650 (Murphy, NJ), 665 (Pinneo, KS), 670 (Purich, VT), and 677 (Slavens, KS). Fifteen goats (16%) failed to gain weight for this weigh period. Half as many have failed to gain weight during the first 56 days of test.
For the first 56 days of the test, ADG has ranged from -0.202 to 0.329 lbs. and averaged 0.120 0.107 lbs. per day. The median ADG is 0.129 lbs. per day. For the first 56 days of the test, the top gaining buck is 650 (Murphy). Three other goats are gaining more than 0.30 lbs. per day: 618 (Dennison, KY), 639 (Loos, IL), and 649 (Murphy). Four other goats are gaining more than 0.25 lbs. per day: 631 (Guffey, MO), 638 (Larr, IN), 655 (Patrick, KY), and 687 (Weber, IL).
Consistent with increasing fecal egg counts, FAMACHA© scores worsened. They ranged from 1 to 4 and averaged 2.3 ± 0.8, compared to 2.1 two weeks ago. Fourteen goats were dewormed, mostly with levamisole (Prohibit® concentrated drench @ 3 ml/50 lbs.) + copper oxide wire particles (COWP, 1 g). According to recent research, COWPs increases dewormer efficacy. A few goats (n=2) were given COWPs due to having high egg counts. High egg counts often get much higher without intervention.
Average body condition (BCS), coat condition, dag, and fecal consistency scores remained relatively unchanged and averaged 2.2 ± 0.3, 2.0 ± 0.1, 0.1 ± 0.4, and 1.2 ± 0.5, respectively. Body condition scores below 2.0 are of concern. No goats had scours (fecal score=4). Fecal samples were obtained from all goats in the test.
