So far, 20 bucks have been nominated to the 2010 Western Maryland Pasture-Based Meat Goat Performance Test (Delaware, 5; Illinois, 5; Maryland, 3; Pennsylvania, 2; and Tennessee, 5).
The deadline for nominations is May 15. When sending in the nomination form, it is not necessary to nominate specific bucks. The buck information sheets are not due until the bucks are brought to the test site on June 4.
Seventy goats are being sought for the 2010 test. If more than 70 nominations are received by the deadline, preference will be given to previous considers and Maryland residents.

The Western Maryland Pasture-Based Meat Goat Performance Test is sponsored by University of Maryland Extension and is conducted at the Western Maryland Research & Education Center in Keedysville, Maryland. While on test, the goats consume a pasture-based diet and are evaluated for growth, parasite resistance, and parasite resilience.

"A central performance test is where animals from different herds are brought to one central location where performance is recorded. The rationale is that observed differences are more likely due to genetic differences, which will be passed onto offspring, rather than environmental differences, which will not be passed onto offspring. The goal of a central performance test is to identify genetic differences among animals."
