Forty-one (41) meat goat does have been consigned to the 1st Western Maryland Performance-Tested Buck and Invitational Doe Sale and Field Day, to be held this Saturday, October 4, at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center near Boonsboro, MD.
Does have been consigned by John Smith (VA), Don Smith (VA), Dana and James Barnes (KY), and Jeanne Dietz-Band (MD). Each of these consigners also have bucks in the sale. All of the does are purebred and percentage Kikos. Most of the does are half-siblings to the bucks on test.
Additional information will be available the day of the sale. The sale will get underway at 2 p.m. Lunch (chevon burgers) will be available for purchase from the MPWV Meat Goat Producers Association.
A mini-field day will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The featured speaker will be Dr. Dan Waldron from Texas A&M University in San Angelo. Dr. Waldron will be talking about different methods of performance testing and other aspects of goat selection. He will give an update on the Texas goat industry.

The Western Maryland Pasture-Based Meat Goat Performance Test is sponsored by University of Maryland Extension and is conducted at the Western Maryland Research & Education Center in Keedysville, Maryland. While on test, the goats consume a pasture-based diet and are evaluated for growth, parasite resistance, and parasite resilience.

"A central performance test is where animals from different herds are brought to one central location where performance is recorded. The rationale is that observed differences are more likely due to genetic differences, which will be passed onto offspring, rather than environmental differences, which will not be passed onto offspring. The goal of a central performance test is to identify genetic differences among animals."
