The 1st Western Maryland Performance Tested Buck and Invitational Doe Sale was held on Saturday, October 4, at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center near Boonsboro, MD.
Three of the top-performing bucks in the test brought $300. Of the 9 next best performing bucks in the test, two sold were sold for $250 and $200. Some of the bucks failed to bring the minimum bid.
Buck consigners had the option of consigning does to the sale. 19 does were sold. The two top selling does brought $350 each. They were consigned by John Smith (VA) and James and Dana Barnes (KY). Some of the does failed to bring the minimum bid.
To be eligible to sell, bucks had to meet minimum performance standards for growth rate, parasite resistance (fecal egg counts), and parasite resilience (FAMACHA scores and number of anthelmintic treatments). They also had to meet minimum standards for structural correctness and reproductive soundness. Most of the does sold were half-siblings to the bucks on test.
The Western Maryland Pasture-Based Meat Goat Performance Testing Program will continue to evaluate the performance of meat goats and will strive to improve the demand for performance-tested meat goat bucks.
