Today, we moved the goats to the field of pearl millet (pennisetum glaucum), a summer annual forage which does the majority of its growing in June, July, and August. The field also contains some weeds, which the goats are attacking with vigor, even more so than the millet.
We are watching the goats closely because it is a new type of forage for them to graze and the field is enclosed in electric netting versus the high-tensile, electric fence which encloses the main 10-acre grazing area.
It is refreshing to see the goats grazing in a field of green, when so much of the area's pastures are brown from the lack of rainfall.
The goats will be worked next on Friday, July 20. They will be weighed (their 28-day weight). FAMACHA© and body condition scores will be determined.
